Six special police officers (SPOs) announced on Saturday morning that they have quit the force.

Since Friday morning, when bodies of three abducted SPOs were found in a Shopian village, a total of 18 SPOs have declared from various platforms that they were no more associated with the police. A few hours after the killings on Friday, five SPOs announced their resignations on social media. Seven more SPOs working with the railway police announced their resignation—and sought apology from people—in a letter that was read out by a preacher at a mosque in Reshipora, Awantipora, after Friday prayers.

Those who resigned on Saturday— Tariq Ahmad, SikanderBhakt, Muzaffar Ahmad, Mohammad Asif, Ishfaq Ahmad and Sajad Ahmad—had written about their decision in a press release that was shared on social media.

Last month, 25 SPOs left their job and returned home in Tral and Awantipora areas of Pulwama district.

The police, however, maintain that an SPO does not have a regular job like a constable. If he gives up job, he simply stays home or informs his superiors verbally. “Formal resignation does not apply to them,” said a police officer.

Awantipora superintendent of police Mohammad Zahid Malik told Greater Kashmir that “no SPO in the jurisdiction of police district Awantipora has left the force”.

“The reports regarding SPO resignations are baseless because all SPOs are working in my area,” he said.

Since last month, a few videos surfaced on social media in which HizbulMujahideen has warned SPOs of “dire consequences” if they don’t quit their jobs.
