Massive protests erupted in Zianakote area of Srinagar Saturday after Army fired on two civilians, including a middle-aged woman, leaving both injured.

A witness said that a passenger vehicle was coming from Beerwah was stopped at HMT crossing by the soldiers who had erected a barricade there. “Soldiers asked the passengers to step out of the vehicle, but they refused, triggering an argument. Meanwhile, a group of youth hurled some stones at the army and the soldiers resorted to firing. Two civilians including a woman sustained injuries,” an eye-witness said.

SSP Srinagar Imtiyaz Ismail Parray said the two injured civilians were shifted to SKIMS Medical College Bemina. He said police have registered a case and “investigations have been taken up.” 

However, no one has been arrested.

A source at SKIMS Bemina said the injured woman, identified as Syeda Salaam of Maloora, aged 50, has received a bullet in her arm. Another civilian identified as Abdul Aziz Laway of Parimpora has received a bullet in his thigh.

Defence spokesman in Srinagar, Colonel Rajesh Kalia said, “Details of the incident are being ascertained.”

Massive clashes were on in HMT area against the incident. “After the news of injuries to two civilians spread in the area, local youth hit the highway and resorted to massive pro-freedom sloganeering and stone pelting on the government forces. The clashes in the area were on till late evening,” locals said.
