Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani on Wednesday ridiculed what he called the “dubious role” played by mainstream political parties including National Conference, Congress, Peoples Democratic Party and others during the recent people’s uprising against attempts to abrogate the Articles 35-A and 370.

In a statement, he said that these political parties are “responsible for the present grim situation” in the state.

Geelani said that the mainstream parties have always been lending a help to New Delhi in its “attempts to erode the Muslim majority character” of the state.

Taking a dig at mainstream politicians, Geelani said: “Their uproars and cries against erosion of Article 370 and other allied matters have proved to be a hoax and a pre-planned drama.”

“Their hue and cry is just a mockery to retain and grab power. They have been exploiting sentiments of innocent people for the past seven decades,” he said.

Geelani said that common people should not get carried away by these “political hypocrites” and should remain steadfast and serious about the “sacred movement” for which the entire nation has offered innumerable sacrifices.

Denouncing the “arbitrary” approach” of the National Investigation Agency against the separatist leadership and people, Geelani said: “The people and leaders including Shabir Ahmad Shah, Altaf Ahmad Shah, Ayaz Akbar, Pir Saif-ullah, Raja Meraj-u-Din Kalwal, Farooq Ahmed Dar, Shahid-ul-Islam, Nayeem Ahmed Khan, Noor Muhammad Kalwal, Advocate Mian Abdul Qayoom, Zameer Ahmad Sheikh, Kamran Yousuf, Sajjad Ahmad, Aga Syed Hassan and Ghulam Nabi Sumji were either unlawfully detained in Tihar jail or summoned by NIA. Their residences are being raided to create scare and harassment.”

Geelani hailed the sacrifices rendered by Aasiya Andrabi and Sofi Fahmeeda, saying that “they have created a laudable history and we salute them for their steadfastness, persistence and commitment towards the movement.”

Geelani, while hailing the courage of detainees lodged in various jails including Kot Bhalwal, Udhampur, Kathua, Amphala, Tihar and other detention centers, appealed to the ICRC, Amnesty International and other international human rights organisations to take cognisance and use their influence to seek immediate release of all detainees.
