Government forces on Saturday launched a massive cordon-and-search-operation (CASO) in over a half dozen villages of Aripal tehsil of Tral sub-district even as two persons were arrested, police and locals said.

“Contingents of police, army’s 42 Rashtriya Rifles and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force 180 carried out searches to trace the militants,” they said.

An official said that following “inputs” about presence of militants, the forces cordoned off nearly seven villages in Aripal belt and launched house-to-house searches besides checking the identity cards of some locals.

According to sources, the massive cordon was lifted after fifteen hours as no contact was established from either side. “Probably militants have managed to escape from the area and operation ended without any casualty,” a police officer said.

CASO was launched in seven villages, including Aripal, Handoora, Wagad, Darganaie Gund, Satura, Gadpora and Lurgam.

A large numbers of forces personnel involved in the search operation descended in dense populated areas during wee hours on Saturday and sealed all entry and exit points.

Meanwhile, locals alleged that after the culmination of cordon in Hundoora village forces thrashed pedestrians and also arrested two youth.

Superintendent of police Awantipora, Muhammad Zahid Malik denied thrashing of pedestrians by forces. “We have not thrashed anyone during the operation, but we arrested two locals for questioning.” Malik said.
