SMC launches cleanliness drive near shrines, masjids

In view of the ongoing Ramadhan month, Srinagar municipal corporation (SMC) authorities have carried out special sanitation and cleanliness drives near Shrines and masjids for the convenience of worshipers.

The SMC has started intensive sanitation drives especially near shrines and masjids. “All measures have been taken to ensure sanitation at important shrines and Masjids including Jamia masjid. We have set up special teams whose job is to ensure sanitation at these important shrines and Masjids throughout the holy month,” said Muhammad Akbar Sofi, SMC chief sanitation officer.

“Different units of SMC have been asked to submit progress report before the office of commissioner on daily basis,” said Sofi.

SMC Commissioner Riyaz Ahmad Wani said that he has directed the health officer to hold market checking and ensure people get hygienic food. “People mostly like to have varieties of cooked food at Sehri and Iftaar time they purchase from market. Consumption of milk increases while dates and other dry food are used to cook different sweet dishes at home,” said Wani. “I have directed health officer to ensure people get hygienic and quality products from market. The move is aimed at to ensure quality eatables, including bakery, poultry, dates and other eatables.”

Wani said that additional fifteen hundred street lights are being installed at various places in the city for the convenience of worshippers who throng shrines and Masjids for pre-dawn prayers and Taraweeh prayers.

Traffic police Srinagar city has also asked the people to strictly follow the traffic rules so that all people reach home on time for Iftaar. “All people want to join their families at Iftaar time but this hurry should not lead to wrong lane driving, resulting in traffic jam,” said SP Traffic City, Al Tahir Geelani, appealing the people to go for car pool in Ramadhan month to minimize the rush of traffic and help in its regulation.
