In a bid to prevent traffic jams due to wrong parking, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has declared 42 spots in summer capital as on-street paid parking spots.

The development came after SMC commissioner Riyaz Ahmad Wani, senior superintendent of police (city traffic) Tahir Saleem and traffic advisor to state Anuj Malhotra held a meeting here to finalize the proposal, said an official.

Sources privy to the meeting said that all the officials stressed for measures to ensure smooth regulation of traffic in city.

Confirming the development, SMC commissioner said in order to streamline the traffic management of Srinagar and to abide by the directions passed by High Court, SMC in coordination with the traffic police department and the experts have identified 47 spots for paid parking.

He informed the spots announced on Wednesday include Residency Road, MA Road, Gawkadal, GPO Lane, Rajbagh Magarmal Bagh, Exhibition Crossing Shaheed Gunj, Old Secretariat, Bemina and Karan Nagar.

He said that the decision was taken after carrying due assessment. SMC in the first instance has developed three spots at MA Road towards Women's College left side, Karan Nagar road stretch in front of its head office and Karan Nagar main road in front of Mughal Darbar.

He added that some of the sign boards and symbols have already been installed on these spots for the awareness of general public while the street parking spots have also been demarcated by yellow lines.

“The charges for parking will be on hour basis. It is five rupees for fifteen minutes. Proper receipt will be issued to the car parker against the amount he pays,” he said.

He added that at this stage SMC would look after these designated parking places for a period of two months and the same shall be outsourced once the multiple parallel parking as already identified will be operational in the city.
